Delhi University colleges start sports trials
NEW DELHI: With the application process over, Delhi University colleges have started sports trials with some conducting fitness tests on June 17.
Like always, there were candidates practising sports that the colleges don't recognize. A problem faced by the Miranda House authorities on Thursday was that karate candidates showed up for taekwondo trials. Sushma Bhardwaj, whose daughter practises karate and was not allowed to take the trials, complained, "We were told at the help desk that my daughter could appear for the trials for martial arts.

The volunteers are not well-informed."
Some parents, including M K Mishra, whose daughter will try for a place in the volleyball team, are worried that too much focus on sports will affect their child's academic performance.
During the process, professor A K Singh, the vice-chancellor's nominee, was present on campus and ensured that no one was allowed a "back-door entry".

Amita Rana, head of the department of sports, Miranda House, says, "We would aim at a minimum team requirement. However, exceptionally good candidates will also be admitted even if the desired number has already been met". Trials also began at St Stephen's and Kamala Nehru College on Thursday. At Hindu and Shri Ram College of Commerce, the trials will begin on June 26 and 22 .
Earlier, DU issued guidelines for the sports category admissions. It has reserved 5% of the seats for candidates seeking admission under the combined quota of sports and extra-curricular activities.
As per the guidelines, there are two categories-super and trial. Those candidates who have participated in international sporting events fall under the super category and are eligible for direct admission. Other aspirants need to take the qualifying fitness test to be followed by sports trials.
